I grew up a coal miner’s granddaughter in a small town in Pennsylvania, where life was simple yet rich with meaning. The quiet rhythm of small-town living fostered an appreciation for the beauty in everyday moments—things that others might overlook but spoke deeply to me. The fields, the old houses, the hardworking people, and the stories they carried shaped my understanding of the world. These early experiences weren’t grand or dramatic, but they were authentic, and they instilled in me a love for things that are raw, real, and unpretentious.
These “forgotten things,” as I often call them, still influence my perspective today. They taught me to see beauty not in perfection but in imperfection—in the worn edges of a life well-lived. This upbringing gave me the lens through which I now view the world and, ultimately, the canvas. It’s this connection to my roots that keeps me grounded, even as my art evolves and takes me to new places.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to live on both the East and West Coasts, and each coast brought its own unique inspiration. The East Coast, with its rich history and changing seasons, taught me to appreciate structure and tradition, while the West Coast, with its vast, untamed landscapes and vibrant culture, encouraged me to embrace freedom and creativity. Together, these experiences formed a beautiful contrast—one that continues to shape my art.
This journey has been more than geographical; it’s been deeply personal. Each new place introduced me to different ways of seeing the world, from the quiet reflection of a misty harbor to the dazzling chaos of a California sunset. These moments of beauty, both big and small, became the seeds of my passion for painting. No matter where I’ve been, I’ve found that beauty is everywhere—if you’re willing to look for it. That’s the gift that traveling has given me and the energy I try to bring into every piece I create.
When I look at the world, I see more than shapes and forms. I see intricate details, vivid hues, and subtle shifts in light and shadow. A flower on the side of the road isn’t just a flower to me—it’s a symphony of color and texture. A butterfly in flight isn’t just movement; it’s grace personified. Even a deserted building, long abandoned, whispers stories of life and history. These simple, fleeting moments are what captivate me and inspire my art.
For me, painting is about translating these moments into something tangible, something that others can experience through my eyes. It’s not just about what the subject is, but how it feels—its essence. The sun reflecting off the side of a building at sunset, for example, might speak of warmth, peace, or the bittersweet passage of time. I take those emotions and impressions and pour them onto the canvas, hoping to evoke the same feelings in those who view my work.
As a self-taught artist, I’ve always approached painting with a sense of curiosity and exploration. I don’t like to confine myself to one technique, one platform, or one medium. To me, art is about breaking free from limitations and discovering new ways to express myself. This openness to experimentation keeps my work fresh and exciting—not just for me, but for those who engage with it.
Each painting I create is a one-of-a-kind reflection of a specific moment in time. I don’t aim for repetition or perfection. Instead, I focus on capturing the essence of a singular experience. Sometimes my work leans toward abstraction, allowing the viewer to bring their own interpretations to the piece. Other times, it’s more literal, but always deeply personal. Each piece represents the world as I see it, transformed into a timeless expression on canvas, a visual story that speaks of life’s fleeting yet eternal beauty.
